St Columba’s does not have its own distinct doctrinal stance. The congregation is made up of people with a range of beliefs.
The United Reformed Church as a whole does have official statements of faith. The ancient Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds can be found at numbers 759-760 in our hymnbook, Rejoice & Sing. The Statement of the Nature, Faith and Order of the United Reformed Church is given at number 761.
As a Reformed church, the URC stands in the tradition of John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli. We believe that salvation is freely given, by God’s grace, rather than earned by our actions. The URC is a Trinitarian church, and emphasises the importance of preaching and studying the Bible. It is our practice to baptise either as babies or on confession of faith.
This is a very brief overview. Further information can be found on the URC’s website, in particular in the Basis of Union and www.urc.org.uk/about-us.html. There is also a discussion leaflet on the Statement of Nature, Faith and Order (760 KB), and a leaflet on church membership (48 KB).
